Home Maintenance | Spring Clean

Home Maintenance | Spring Clean

We are approaching the time of year when many people think about doing a big ‘spring clean’. While as the name suggests, it is primarily cleaning, it is also a good opportunity to do all those little maintenance jobs that so many of us put off throughout the year.

However, by putting those small jobs off – cleaning out your gutters, not fixing up that hole in the wall etc – you are risking them becoming much bigger and much more expensive jobs in the future, and who wants that to happen? Here, we look at a few fairly basic cleaning and maintenance tasks that you should be doing regularly to keep your house clean, safe and looking great.

Take a look at the roof

Roof replacement is dreaded by homeowners because it is an enormous job and one that costs a significant amount of cash to do, but keeping the one you have in good condition will extend its life. Taking care of roof problems can also help the home’s heating and cooling systems run more efficiently, as well as prevent roof leaks that cause water damage.

It’s a good idea to have your roof inspected at least once a year by a professional, and after any significant weather events such as a large storm or periods of heavy rain or wind.

Watch out for signs of unwanted pests

It is critical to conduct regular pest inspections of both the inside and outside of your home. Take note of any cracks near your home’s foundation where furry friends might get in, as well as any roofing problems where you could get some unexpected guests. You can also hire a professional pest inspector to inspect your home once a year. When it comes to spotting animal or pest problems in your home, the sooner you catch them, the better.

Clean out the coils in your refrigerator

This is a task that so many overlook but it can prolong the life of your fridge. Twice a year, clean out the coils in your refrigerator. They are usually located at the bottom of the fridge and require you to take the cover off and give it a quick vacuum to remove any debris and dirt that gets caught in there.

Change the filters in your HVAC unit

If you’re lucky enough to live in a country that means you need an air conditioning unit in your home then this ones important. Changing your air filter will extend the life of your air conditioner, improve its efficiency, and improve the air quality in your home. It will also save you money in the longer term. If your unit does not seem to be working as well as it could be and changing the air filter does not make a difference, it might be time to call in a HVAC Repair company to take a look at it for you.

These are just a few of the tasks that you can do to keep your home clean, safe and looking great. Maintenance can seem like a big task, but done throughout the year and regularly it can prevent large, more expensive jobs from cropping up.
